An Inspection Guide For Buying a Used Trailer
Trailers are extremely useful tools for both personal and professional hauling purposes. No matter what kind you have, you’ve got the means to carry all sorts of cargo over both short and long distances. In order to save money, many people like to look into buying a used trailer, but it is important to determine whether a given used trailer is a worthwhile investment. Here’s what to look for.
Examine the Tires
The tires on the trailer should be a matching set and in good condition. Any good trailer owner would replace bad tires before they try to sell their trailer.
Look Over the Interior
For enclosed trailers, you’ll need to examine the door, walls, roof and floor of the trailer, and for open trailers, you’ll mainly need to examine the floor. Any signs of wood rot or rust or other damage are bad signs that the trailer hasn’t been cared for well, as these issues should have been addressed.
Test the Lights
The lights and signals on the trailer need to function properly in order for it to be safe to drive. Test them out to make sure that they work; burned-out light bulbs are a signal of neglect.
Get the Maintenance History
Finally, it’s a good idea to ensure that you have the maintenance records for the trailer so that you can determine how well it was cared for by prior owners. Check the records to see whether the trailer has had significant repairs made to it and learn as much as you can about the trailer before you buy it.
