Buying a Dump Trailer
If your work requires you to regularly haul large amounts of debris or other loose materials like gravel or sand either around a worksite or on and off it, you need a dump trailer. These sturdy trailers can be used to haul many different types of materials and they come with a range of features to make the loading and dumping processes that much easier. There are a few things to think about when shopping for a dump trailer, some of which we’ve outlined below.
Size of Your Trailer
First, you’ll want to think about the size of dump trailer you need. Your dump trailer will have to accommodate the biggest jobs you have, but you don’t want it to be so large that it’s cumbersome. Most dump trailers are about 14’ long, but there are bigger models that come in lengths of up to 30’ to suit unique hauling needs. It’s also important to consider how much your typical loads will weigh so that your trailer is durable enough to handle them.
Think about the work sites you will take your dump trailer to, since you’ll want to get a model that is easy to maneuver around the site without becoming stuck or being unable to access the areas where material has to be deposited. It may end up being better for your work to get a dump trailer that is smaller in order to fit it on your work site and simply take smaller loads more frequently.
Wall Height
Another factor to consider is the wall height of your dump trailer. The wall height can vary between models and brands, but the standard height is approximately two feet or 24” high. This height is generally useful for handling most types of materials, but if you’ve got really big loads or you are concerned about spillage, you may want to consider getting a dump trailer with taller walls. You can also look into getting extensions for the walls to make them temporarily higher as needed.
Thickness of Metal
Another important consideration to think about when shopping for a dump trailer is how thick the metal should be. Typically, thicker metal is required on a dump trailer to adequately support and handle the loads you have to carry without denting or buckling under the burden. If your cargo is going to be extremely lightweight, you can get away with purchasing a dump trailer made from a lightweight metal, but most models will be made of thicker and stronger metals for durability.
