It doesn’t matter what type of trailer you own and use — you definitely don’t want to lose your trailer to enterprising thieves. Trailers are expensive pieces of equipment, and as such, they are frequently the target of thieves who may want the trailer for themselves or to resell it for a profit. So how can you deter those pesky purloiners from swiping your trailer out from under your nose?

Flat Rock Trailers in Hewitt, serving Killeen and Waco, is your Texas horse trailer dealer. Below, you’ll find some of our top tips for avoiding the theft of your trailer, no matter where you take it.

1. Try Multiple Strategies

Unfortunately, no matter what strategy you use or lock you buy, nothing is completely impervious to theft. That’s why employing as many theft-prevention strategies as possible is the right way to go. Maybe one lock can be broken, but is a thief really going to have time to undo four different locks after figuring out where they are? Probably not!

2. Lock the Wheels

If you attach locks to your wheels, then the trailer won’t roll and it cannot be towed anywhere or stolen very easily. Heavy-duty wheel locks with a rubber coating are best to prevent tire damage.

3. Apply Hitch Guards

The ball hitch on your trailer can be locked as well, to prevent thieves from anchoring the hitch to their own vehicles instead. There are even special gooseneck trailer locks, if that’s the style of trailer you own.

4. Use Locking Lug Nuts

If a thief doesn’t have the time to take your whole trailer, they might try to just take some of the more expensive parts off it instead. Tires are one part of a trailer that are really easily stolen (this is true for other vehicles as well; you’ve likely seen a bicycle locked to a pole that’s missing a front wheel before). If you swap out the standard lug nuts for a style that locks, then a thief is going to have a really hard time removing those wheels and they’ll probably just give up.

5. Customize Your Horse Trailer

Finally, a really personalized horse trailer is one that’s going to be hard for thieves to hide and resell without drawing attention to themselves. Painting the exterior of your trailer in bright colors or using unique patterns, stencils or decals will help to make it stand out and make it more recognizable to law enforcement who might be searching for it.

We hope that using some or all of these strategies helps you to keep your trailer safe and in your possession.
